Who is Tux Droid?
Tux Droid, the first generation 2.4 GHz wireless robot specially built for Linux®, is now in production and will ship in january. Tux Droid, your smart desktop agent: interact with Linux® applications without having to be near your computer screen! He will read your e-mails, act as VOIP phone, and much more!
The idea
Tux is a small robot wirelessly connected to a computer. It can act as a computer agent or as an input device. It has sensors and actuators to provide a rich communication link between you and your computer. It can show you what's happening on your computer and send back your input. And we nearly forgot to mention that most of all, Tux is fun!
We often need some background daemons, notes that show up, sounds that pop out and icons that change to monitor and indicate all events that are happening on a computer. We'd like to know when someone want to contact us by IM, or when our pseudo shows up on irc, when we got emails, when our cd is burned or my transfer is complete. All this works fine when we're in front of our computer but what if we want to practice some cooking far away from our computer and don't really want to stick a laptop on our cap? That's the idea of a wireless agent.
We have Tux as a mascot, we can simply give it a wireless link and the computer now has a true living appearance which can be used as an extension for many applications. We can have Tux Droid along with us, everywhere (well, nearly) and it can keep me in touch with our virtual world. It could read our new emails if we want so, or play my freshly received podcasts, we could use its buttons or a remote control to control my applications, etc.
With all it's sensors and actuators, Tux Droid really gets alive and can do much more than a simple agent. See the complete list of Tux features to get an idea and you'll immediately see how it can be used for an amazing number of things. Well, even in front of your desk it can be fun. Of course it's interface is limited, it has no screen so you won't have images or videos and without a mouse/keyboard, it can be troublesome to chat. But that's not what it's for. If you want to get your eyes out of a screen to breathe a bit and move out for some exercise but still want to stay connected (hugh, we're not crazy), Tux Droid should be a nice device to add to your collection of geek's gears.
The idea behind this project is to get a community that will share all it's applications for Tux Droid as open-source. The supported applications will grow as users will have needs and develop interfaces with Tux Droid. Tux's API is open-source and under heavy development so applications are only to come (soon hopefully).
