The gadgets can be controlled using your voice! Here is illustrated how to configure this function to makeTux Droid listen to voice commands.
1. Recording a voice command
First, enable the voice recognition by selecting "Options > Voice recognition" from the Gadget Manager menu.
Next, start the voice recognition configuration windows by selecting "Tools > Voice recognition configuration" from the Gadget Manager window.
As soon as the window pops up the mouth of Tux Droid will open. The microphone is concealed inside the beak of Tux (the small hole in the center). So when recording a command, make sure you speak in the direction of the beak and to do it quite close to optimize the recording quality.
To illustrate we are going to record a voice command to start the e-mail gadget: 1. In the dictionary list select "Email" 2. Now keep your Tux Droid close and say "Email" in the direction of the beak. Tux will repeat the recorded sound and a 3D cepstrum analysis will be displayed. 3. If you want to listen to the recording again, click on "Replay last record". 4. If you think the recording was good click on the "Store" button". Now Close the window and try it out. |
2. Using voice commands
- To use the voice recognition mode, you have to keep the button on the head pushed. This will open the beak of Tux.
- Say "email" in the same fashion like you did when recording the sound in the above step.
- If your voice command is recognized, the eyes in Tux Droid will flicker shortly and the email gadget will be launched.
- If Tux keeps sitting idle however it means the voice recognition cannot match you voice command with the recorded one. Try to repeat "email" several more times. If you have no success go back to step 1 to record the command once more.
3. Remarks
- The "Sensibility" tab is currently not used yet. This will implemented in the next version.
- In case you have difficulties to get the function working here are a few pointers that might help. The key is to have a good recording of the command in the first place:
- Make sure your place is silent. Having music playing in the background for example will not help to make a good recording.
- Keep your Tux close enough in case of difficulty (i.e. 5- 10 cm) and speak in the direction of the beak.
- Try to speak as naturally as possible. Meaning when you do the recording in a loud and forced voice, the command will not work when you try it later with a more casual and more silent voice. When experimenting using different tones and emphasis that the output in the 3D cepstrum can vary greatly.
- Avoid too short commands. The voice recognition function will make the match with the recorded command more easily when the voice command duration is longer.
- The voice commands you register are free to choose. For the email gadget you can use "read email", "check my spam" or whatever word and in whatever language you prefer. Be creative to make interacting with your Tux more fun!
