1. Requirements

To get the Tux Gadget Manager working, you already should have done the following:

• Installation of tuxsetup1.3-rc1

• Installation of the TTS voice files: currently only English (UK & US) and French are supported in the Gadget Manager.

• The only additional thing required is updating the firmware and reflashing the internal sound flash in Tux. A firmware updater wizard will pop up upon the initial launch of the Gadget Manager.
  

2. Using Tux Gadget Manager

2.1 Starting the Tux Gadget Manager

In the menu bar look for the Tux Droid Icon in the Accessories map. If for some reason you can't find it there, launch it directly from a terminal window:

If this is the first time you start the Gadget Manager the Firmware Updater will detect the firmware in Tux Droid is outdated. Please follow the Firmware Updater wizard instructions carefully and your Tux should be reflashed in no time.

2.2 The Gadget Manager GUI

Everything is now setup and updated! Let's check out the Gadget Manager.

1: The fish dongle icon indicates the daemons are running ok. 2: The Tux Droid head indicates the radio connection is enabled. 3: The list of installed gadgets is displayed here. Tux Gadget Manager comes with these three pre-installed gadgets. Right-clicking a gadget will bring up a menu to modify the settings for every gadget. See below for info on the right-click menu. Double-clicking a gadget in the list will start it. 4: This is the most important part of the GUI. The arrow indicates which gadget is currently selected. When a gadget is activated, the arrow will be replaced with a gear icon. As long a gadget is running, you cannot select or run another gadget.

Taking a closer look to the right-click menu of the gadgets you will find the following menu items:

"Show" : Some gadgets have a GUI to display specific gadget information. When "show" is grayed out like in the screenshot there is no gadget GUI available. "Run" : Starts the gadget. "Update now" : Refreshes the information of the gadget. In case of the Weather gadget, the server will be contacted to get updated weather information. "Updating": The gadget will automatically update the information required for the gadget. The update interval can be specified in the settings window of the gadget. "Active in voice menu": When using the remote control, the gadget will be listed in the voice menu. "Remove" : Removes the gadget from the manager. "Settings" : Displays the configuration window of a gadget. "Help": Displays additional information on how to use the gadget. "About": Displays the gadget's author and version number.

When selecting "Options" in the Tux Gadget Manager menu you have the following menu items:

"Manager settings" : this will bring up the configuration for the TTS. In case your Tux didn't say anything so far, check if the TTS settings are configured with English or French. You also increase the pitch a few notches to have a more cartoonish voice. "Update firmware" : If the Gadget Manager detects there is more recent firmware version, you can reflash the fish dongle and Tux Droid firmware from here. "Voice recognition" : Enables the voice recognition function. Note that you will have to record the voice commands first to have this function working. "Automatic update": If for some reason you don't want to update the firmware like when using custom built firmware versions, you can disable the firmware version detection here. "Quit" : Will close the Gadget Manager.

When selecting "Tools" in the Tux Gadget Manager menu you have the following menu items:

"Voice recognition": This will bring up the voice recognition window. Here you can record the voice commands to control the gadgets. "Scenes manager": Is a manager tool for Tux behavior files. This is still in beta and only supported by the e-mail gadget. "Controller" is a graphical interface ideal for exploring the Tux Droid functions. You can actuate the motors, LED's and try out the Text-To-Speech. It will also display information like the battery level, light level and microphone level. "Debugger": The debugger can be of use when troubleshooting self made gadgets. "Audio Flash": This tool is for modifying the sounds in the audio flash memory inside Tux. Can be handy to personalize the sounds.

2.3 The remote control and the Gadget Manager

The blue arrow is controlled with the remote control, When scrolling trough the gadgets Tux will say the name of the selected gadget. Buttons of importance are described below:

2.4 The Gadget Manager tray icon

When the Gadget Manager is running a tray icon will be visible in the menu bar in the upper right corner.

• Tray icon: 
• Left-clicking the little Tux head will show/hide the Gadget Manager GUI on the desktop.
• Blue eyes indicate the daemons are running ok. White eyes indicate the daemons are not running and the Gadget Manager will not work.
• Tray icon menu:
  
• Clicking "Show manager" will show/hide the Manager GUI just like when you left-click the tray icon.
• Select "Quit" to exit the Gadget Manager completely.
