64-bits incompatibility statement

Posted by se at May 22. 2008

Dear all,

We apologize to the 64-bits Linux users and we agree on most comments posted about the incompatibility issue. This is our feedback:

Problem (rough) description:
A: The TTS library coming with Tux Droid software is high quality but it is not open source. It is currently not available as a 64-bits library and we are not able to recompile it.
B: the Python interpreter running on 64-bits Linux uses 64-bits libraries.
These two facts together induce the incompatibility problem.

Remediations and road map:
Clearly the fact that the TTS library is not open source makes us unable to fully control the problem. Anyway, we are taking the following actions:

- a 64-bits package with TTS function disabled is available now. It also includes a sneak preview (for 64-bits users only!): Attitunes Studio, a powerful and intuitive scenario maker for Tux Droid. Download the deb here and the tar.gz here.

- a 64-bits package using an adapted Python interpreter is being proposed and tested by LeFred. We are checking the result and will release it ASAP. ETA: best case, next week; worst case, end of June. This will be a version with full functionality for 64-bits users.

- Our TTS supplier is releasing in the coming weeks his new TTS SDK, supporting 64-bits libraries. ETA: best case, end of June; worst case : end of September.

- Based on the comments of the community we are working on an open source version of OSL able to use open source TTS engines. Security issues are being discussed with our TTS supplier in order to guarantee them required protections of their code. ETA: September.

If any questions or you have feedback on the package, please post it here to keep all ongoing communication and updates in one single thread only.

UPDATE!

There is a 64-bits compatible Fedora installation package available for download. This includes a full solution with the previous 64-bits related problems, meaning also the TTS functionalities are back.

To install the package: unpack and launch the included installation script as root user from a terminal window:
./install.sh

Download is available here.

Well, good news for the happy 64bits system owners!

What about those who use a system with a different libc6 version that prevents the precompiled library to load? It is the case for (at least) debian etch (stable), and the xandros linux found on the EEE PC.

A possible solution to this issue is to provide statically linked binaries.
