Tux won't turn on.

Posted by Kim Shannon at January 09. 2008

After a long wait, I finally recieved my own Tux Droid.  After freeing him from his package, I put him on the charger.  The eyes flashed as the book said they would. So, after getting a feel for the buttons (I'm not sure what I did, but one of the eyes lit up), I let him be while he gathered some power.  This morning, after getting the Tux software installed (after spending a LONG time updating Linux), I found I couldn't get Tux to talk to the dongle.  In fact... Tux won't do anything at all.  No matter what I try, no responce.  The eyes don't even light up at the charger any more.  What's wrong with my tux?  Is there anything I can do, or is it completely broken?

Did you try to update the firmware already?

What happens if you plug the power then turn tux on, do you get the hello sound and movements?

First time I turned it on so it'll charge, it moved a bit, and the lights came on.  No hello sound.  After a couple hours of charging (Like... 8 or so), I turned it off.  When I turned it back on again next, and every time I've tried since, it hasn't done anything.  No light, no sound, no movement.  The RF dongle doesn't detect it.  It won't go into coding mode.  Last thing it responded to, was when it was charging, I pressed the head button, and the left eye lit up.  Hasn't done anything since.

Perhaps you turned your Tux into bootloader mode

The left eye LED will be lit, indicating Tux Droid is in the bootloader mode.

updating your firmware can be helpful

Normally, when you have the transformer plugged, no matter the battery level, your tux should react normally, having all sounds and movements. So in your case it seems either the transformer doesn't work or the plug inside tux doesn't work. We test all tuxs before shipping, but not the transformers. Can you test if the trasformer works? Either use a multimeter or you can simply put your tongue on the plug, touching both inside and outside ring. If it works you'll feel it slightly. It doesn't hurt, but you can still ask a good friend to do it for you ;)

If the trasformer works and the problem comes from tux, better send it back then.
