Tux Droid, first impressions

Posted by eFfeM at March 26. 2008

Hi all,

Just received my tux droid today. I thought I'd share my first impressions with you.

Unpacking

This thing really looks impressive. Nice box, nice dongle.

Reading the doc

Decided to read the documentation for once (as it is so small and when I got the box it was almost time for dinner, so no time to play anyway :) )
page 1: product content: this one does not list the remote control. nice extra.
There could be a little bit of info on how to place the battery, but that did not cause me a problem.
page 6: it tells to visit www.kysoh.com to go to the installation guide. Unfortunately there is no info on the front page. Instead it is at http://www.tuxisalive.com/getting-started. It would be nice if there was some form of link on the kysoh home page to this place.
(btw: off topic: the kysoh page still has a picture that says "preorder now". Seems a little bit off, as I got mine immediately).;
page 10: detachable wings. Haven't looked yet if/how this can be done. Still too afraid to break it. I would have appreciated some more detailed instructions here (but maybe it is just simpler than I think).

Installing/configuring the software

Connecting: piece of cake

Installing as audio device: with xmms: works like a charm. Changing the sound settings with gnome (on ubunty 7.10). No luck what-so-ever.
Tried the suggestions in the forum, but to no avail. /dev/dsp is my primary audio device, /dev/dsp1 my droid. cat file >/dev/dsp1 works, sound settings test does not. Both usb sound and usb sound #1 give errors. Puzzled.

Installing voices: it is not clear how I can select which voice is used (I know I can use 2, I want dutch and english (female), haven't found yet how to arrange that, first installed dutch, then british, now I have only the 2 british voices. I could not get dutch back.

Installing tuxsetup: no real problem. Initially no conntection so I had to unplug the fish, then did a kill of all that was droid related, reconnected worked.

Installing tux gadget manager: works like a charm; adding new gadgets as well. Gadgets work nicely.

First impressions

Probably the nicest gadget I ever bought. Still lots of things to discover, like:
- how to get the dutch voice back
- how to run multiple apps at the same time (I would like to have e.g. the email and rss notifier and an alarm clock running at the same time)
- how to write my own program (guess I have no excuse any more not to learn python :) )
- getting IR output. Would it be possible to let tux control my TV?
- get the sw running on my eeePC and NSLU2 (I've seen the thread on eeePC so this is going to be easy, guess NSLU2 is easy too as I have decent NSLU2 and linux experience).
 - use it as a voip sip phone (not skype but e.g. using it as input for kphone or ekiga or wengophone), guess this is mainly a matter of configuration
- upgrade the firmware
- and probably way more things....

Hello there

Thank you for your first impressions...

Concerning the preorder, you were lucky. You've received maybe one of the last of our stock.

We had to put the "preorder" banner again because we ran out of stock!

You right, we are now developing a new Kysoh website and in this version we will add a link to the get started.

Thank you and have fun!
