Tux: hardware patch for windows

Posted by Antoine Brenner at June 08. 2007

Imagine that you have someone in your company who uses windows XP on a laptop as an unpriviledged user, and who wants to download a large file from a slow server, for an estimated download time of 5 hours (a software update to a proprietary software if you must know)...

The laptop is configured to go into sleep mode after 20 minutes of inactivity of mouse or keyboard. Unfortunately as the user is not priviledged, this cannot be changed without the administrator's password (I personnaly think that this defaut is a major annoyance of windows XP on laptops). However, the laptop has to be left unattended and the download must not be stopped: this is a problem.

Our solution was to have Tux droid hit the 'tab' key of the laptop so that it never goes to sleep. One could say that this isĀ  a hardware fix to a nasty windows annoyance:

Thanks, Tux Droid !

The best "patch" for Win, however, would be to get rid of it and install some Linux ;)
