battery level

Posted by eFfeM at May 01. 2008

Hi,

I had the impression that I had issues with the battery level, so decided on a short investigation, and at least I found something curious:
(this is done with tuxdriver and the test program):

My voltage was around 5.4. Decided to fully charge the tux first so added it to the charger.
Then after a while I got to around 6.2V. I've kept tux on the charger and since then the reported voltage has dropped and is now fluctuating between 5.7 and 5.9 V. I've not touched 6V (full) for quite a while, although it is still charging.

Anyone a suggestion?

It's a normal charging behavior. We use an 'intelligent' charger circuit. So, the first time you plug the transformer, the charge begins. At the end, when the battery is full, the trickle mode is activated, and voltage drop quickly. The battery is charging with a low current only to keep the voltage.

This is to preserve the battery and increase it life time.

Ah thanks,
In the past I had a situation where my battery seemed to be exhausted quickly. Haven't had time to investigate deeply (actually that was the reason for this measurement. Will keep an eye on the level.

The battery has a nominal voltage of 4.8V. Under 4.4V, it may be considered completely flat and when fully charged, it should be around 5.3V.
Now, when the adapter is plugged, the voltage will be higher. At first, when charging a flat battery, the voltage will rise around 6V in about 4-5 hours then the charger will switch to trickle mode where a very small current is still applied to the batery to keep it fully-charged. So in trickle mode, the voltage doesn't mean much, and 5.7 to 5.9V is normal.

I should record a charging curve and comment it someday.
